American Culinary Guam Chapter Visits AsTumbo Elementary
The American Culinary Federation came to AsTumbo Elementary and provided fruits and fruit drinks while discussing the importance of healthy eating, and exercise. Thanks goes out to all the chefs who took time to share and teach the 5th grade the importance of healthy living: Chef Clay Wai, Chef Jesse Talavera, Chef Raymond Barnes, Chef Vicky Schrage, and Chef Ron Fernandez.

TCEA Robotics Arena Contest
The 5th Grade Robotics Team represented us the first TCEA Robotics Arena Contest held at the Dusit Thani. Kayla, their captain, Lael, the co-captain, and their team mates, Heaven and Chasity stayed back everyday after school and even came in during Christmas break to prepare for the battle. The competition was intense but our team was very proud to have been a part of the first official contest on Guam.
GATE Visual Art Showcase
On October, 2nd, AsTumbo Elementary celebrated the completion of the GATE Visual Art Program conducted by Mrs. Gisela Guile with an art showcase of student work. The community was invited to celebrate with the student artists as they put their art on display. Thanks to Mrs. Guile, Mr. Santos, our superintendent, Mr. Fernandez, our very supportive parents and teachers, and especially to our wonderful students who put on a great show.

AsTumbo Elementary students are participating in the T-Galleria Ornament Decorating Contest and have their tree adorned with red robots and fidget spinners made by students. All are welcome to check out the trees and spin the fidget spinners. The top vote getter will received $2000.00 so please visit T-Galleria and vote for AsTumbo Elementary. Voting is from November 23 to December 25.
ATES Spelling Bee
Our School-wide Spelling Bee, held on November 29th, was a tough competition for our 24 participants. Aaron Antonio became our champion in the final round when he spelled “fulcrum”. Congratulations to our alternate, Elcieruth Yoshinobu who will be preparing with Aaron for the Island-wide Spelling Bee. Thank you to our parents, faculty and our military partners for supporting this worthwhile event.
Thanksgiving Luncheon Celebration
Thank you to all our family and friends for joining us on Wednesday and supporting our lunch fundraiser and raffle sales. The luncheon was a festive and joyful time for all and our students shared how happy they were to celebrate with family and friends.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Halloween Parade. Students, faculty, and families joined together to celebrate with costumes and music during our morning parade and ended with our annual Halloween dance. 3rd grade would like to extend a thank you to everyone who supported their dance fundraiser.
STEAM Week
Our school celebrated STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Math) Week in September to get the kids motivated and excited about learning. Each day of the week was dedicated to a theme and encouraged students to get creative with their interpretation of the theme. Thanks to all those who participated. Mes Chamorro Art Contest 2018Congratulations to 4th grade student, Heavan Mabalot who placed first in the Mes Chamorro Art Competition. Heaven was presented with a plaque in the Legislative Hall with our local senators. Special thanks goes out to our Chamorro teachers and her parents for supporting her in the contest.

2018 Island-wide Weaving Competition
On March 18, 2018, AsTumbo Elementary participated in the annual Weaving Competition at the Agana Shopping Center.
Student representatives from all six grade levels competed against the other elementary schools and took first in both divisions. Congratulations to all our student participants. The Chamorro Committee would like to thank all those who came out to support our students.

On Saturday, March 10th, our student representatives competed in the Island-wide Geran Kadon Pika Competition. With the support of their parents and teachers, our team prepared their kadon pika dish for the judges.
Our 5th grade teams consisted of Alyssa Benavente, Tho’leyan Baza and Ciara Blas with their coach, Mr. Thomas Baza. Congratulations to our team in placing 3rd in the competitive cooking arena. Hailey Ann Pangelinan and Kyle Bituin faced off against with other 38 other GATE students from the participating elementary schools in the annual GATE Math Meet. The competition was tough and the questions rigorous. Congratulations to Kyle for making it to the tie breaker round and placing 4th in the meet.
Math Kangaroo Competition 2018
The Math Kangaroo Competition and Math Carnival was a competitive and exciting event for our GATE students as they not only competed against other grade level peers from other schools, but competed in the math inspired carnival games. Results are coming soon!

3rd Quarter Awards Ceremony

Stock Market Game Banquet
The 4th and 5th grade GATE students participated in this year's Stock Market Game sponsored by Asia Pacific. They learned to play the stock market buying stocks and watching the market. Our team including Alyssa Benavente, Rai Jose Cruz, and Isaiah Carlos received an honorable mention at the awards. Hailey Ann Pangelinan also won during the raffle prize for the kids. We held our schoolwide spelling bee on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 as students vied for the position of student representative for AsTumbo Elementary at the Island-wide Spelling Bee being held next year. Congratulations to Jaeden Arjona who spelled the championship word, merengue, which is a popular Dominican and Haitian ballroom dance. Positive Behavior Incentives and Support Presentation
We recently had our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) presentation conducted by Ms. O’Connor, our school guidance counselor. Students viewed appropriate behaviors in different school settings including the hallways, restrooms, and the school cafeteria.
Career Week
The students were visited by officers in uniform to learn about the careers they have chosen and the benefits of perseverance.

Halloween ParadeWe celebrated Halloween with our annual parade where students, faculty and staff dressed in fun costumes for everyone to see. Students reviewed the safety rules for Halloween not only with Mr. Santos, but also with the Guam Police Department who visited the school.

Students were recognized at the District-wide Assessment Awards Ceremony for being successful in any of the sub-tests in the 2015-2016 ACT Aspire Assessments. Jaeden Arjona received the Award of Excellence for exemplary scores in all the sub-tests. Congratulations to all our awardees for your continued push for excellence.

On Friday, April 7th, the students of AsTumbo made their way outside to participate in the Easter Egg Hunt and the Mes Chamorro Field Day. The intermediate grades assisted in placing the eggs on the ground for the primary grades to enjoy an egg hunt. Afterwards, all grade levels competed with eachother in the field day activities based on our Mes Chamorro theme.

March 24 was the Jumprope for Heart field day for all the kids and they had a blast! Students jumped in a relay race as they competed against the other classes in their grade levels. Thank you to all who supported this fantastic event and kept the kids jumping and promoting healthy habits.

Kids for the Cure AWARDS!!!
On February 3rd, students were recognized for their hard work and diligence in the final school challenge that took place in December. Top awards went out to our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students who ran, jumped, and hustled their way to the top. Some students manage to nab more than one award. Congratulations to all our awardees and participants for a job well done.

We had our 2nd Quarter Awards on February 1st, as many students were recognized for their hard work and diligence in getting good grades and coming to school daily and on time. We would like to thank all our parents for supporting their child(ren) in their academics and in their participation in the extra-curricular activities at school.

On December 7th, we held our annual School-wide Spelling Bee and 34 students competed for the chance to represent our school at the island-wide competition. After nineteen rounds, Jaeden Arjona spelled the championship word "pilgrimages" taking first place and securing her spot as the school representative for AsTumbo Elementary. Congratulations to Jasmin Bustos who came in second and will be our alternate at the island-wide competition. Kudos to all our student participants and our supportive teachers and parents for your efforts in getting our children ready for the school spelling bee. Special thanks goes out to our judges from the military who regularly support our students during our school events.

After many sessions with our coaches and teachers, our students will be recognized for their hard work and "can-do" attitude. Students will be presented the top individual awards for each of the fitness assessments in the following; 100 meter dash, sit ups, push ups, air squats and jump rope. Medals will be given to the top 3 boys and girls in each grade level. Thank you to everyone for supporting this extraordinary program.

To celebrate the holiday season, our Christmas Program, An Old-Fashioned Christmas, showcased our student performers as they sang and danced for their families. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, We Need a Little Christmas, and Little Drummer Boy were just a few of the classics that played during our lively show. Thank you to all who came out and supported in one way or another to make the festive season a memorable one.

We were very fortunate not only to have the Kids for the Cure Program at AsTumbo, but also to have our school featured on My Story on Fox 6 at 6 PM, Monday, November 28th.
Sorenson Media filmed our students in action during one of their K4C sessions with the coaches. The also interviewed members of the school, including Mr. Paet, Mr. Hoya, and 4th grade students Kyle and Ezekiel. Congratulations to our team and good luck to all our students in their continued quest to practice lifelong healthy habits. Special thanks goes out to Karina Quito who brought the Kids for the Cure Program to our school and to Sorenson Media for this very unique opportunity. |

AsTumbo GATE Choir puts on a memorable performance!
|
On October 6, the AsTumbo GATE Choir put on an outstanding performance for the entire school community. Students were treated to music from Oscar nominated pieces such as You've Got a Friend in Me and The Bare Necessities. We also watched a local version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears starring our students in 4th and 5th grade in the Drama Club. Congratulations to our students who won special awards for outstanding work in the performance. We would like to thank Mr. LaPlante for planning, preparing, and putting on a great show. We would to like thank all our parents for the choir members to stay back and rehearse and to all our parents who provided the funding to transport our children to Southern High Theater. It was certainly a memorable day.

First Day of SY 2016 - 2017
August 18, 2016 marked the first day of school as faculty, staff, parents, and students entered AsTumbo Elementary's gates for the new academic year. At the end of the school day, students were able to meet all the faculty and staff through a school assembly. Mr. Santos, our school principal, talked to the kids about the importance of following school rules and reminding older students to watch out for their younger siblings. The first day of school closed out successfully.

Parents attended the Summer School Awards and Student Showcase that was held in each classroom. Parents not only got to look at the work that the had completed through out the program, but they were treated to a video montage on the Promethean Boards of the students in action.

Mrs. Muth and the kids use multiple means to learn reading, language arts, and math. The teacher assistants get into the groove with the kids.

Mrs. Pestanas has the kids have participated in a variety of learning activities using STEAM while blasting off into space, traveling around the world, and practicing their engineering skills.

Mrs. Felipe's class participates in STEAM activities like the plant science/art activity and the engineering challenges with Lego blocks and modeling clay and toothpicks.

Mrs. Wusstig's class take on STEAM activities including the boat challenge, the egg drop challenge, and many others as part of the summer learning.

The 4H Club from the University of Guam presented to the students the importance of responsible citizenship through an folding art activity. Students learned about the mission of the 4H Club and and what each 'H' stands for (Head, Heart,Hands, and Health). Students how they can be responsible citizens by coming up with ways to save trees, water, and energy. For more information, check out their website: 4H Club.

The Coconut Rhino Beetle Team from the University of Guam presented to the summer school students the importance of working together as a community to combat the pests that have affected Guam's local trees. Presenters Derrick Diego and Donatus Somol shared with students how they can do their part to help in the battle against the beetles. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries brought their celebrity koko bird, Buenas to visit the kids as they learned what they can do to protect the local wildlife. Students learned about the coral reef and how it protects Guam and the different sea-life through a display of specimens brought by the department. Agricultural Development Services also shared exciting work in hydroponics as well as how they can assist the school to have its own garden. Thank you to all our presenters for taking time to share important scientific work being done on Guam.

We had our first presentation by Mrs. Phoebe Wall from the University of Guam Cooperative Extension Service which provides educational outreach to the communities in the area of Agriculture. She presented on the life cycle of plants and provided a fun science experiment for kids to do in the classroom.

In celebration of READ ACROSS AMERICA, Mrs. Acosta led a presentation for the entire school to honor Dr. Seuss and encourage students to read, read, read. Faculty, staff, and students were asked to dress up as a character or wear a shirt that can be read.

Guam Cancer Care encourages ATES students to JOIN THE FIGHT! by staying healthy!
Our school was a sea of purple as faculty, staff, and students dressed in purple to support the fight against cancer.
Guam Cancer Care presented to our students their mission and rally call to fight cancer by practicing healthy habits like getting active and eating healthy. After a rousing introduction from Power 98 radio personality, Kyle Mandapat, Terry Cuabo, the executive director of the non-profit organization, encouraged children to not only practice healthy habits, but to also share the message with family and friends. Kids received a special visit from Kyle Mandapat of Power 98 who came to deliver a very important message about being prepared for the upcoming District-wide Assessments. 2nd Quarter Awards Ceremony
On January 22, we had our ceremony for the 2nd quarter. Check out all our awardees from kindergarten to 4th grade.
Parent orientation a success.
Parents were invited to the school to learn the expectations of their childrens' teachers. Support programs such as Chamorro, ESL, GATE and the Resource Room shared presentations to inform parents of their program and available services. Truancy officer, John Meno and his colleagues as well as the school guidance counselor and the school nurse were on campus to inform parents of the importance of student daily attendance and how to get help if needed. We would like to thank all those who came to support our students by attending and presenting. If you would like to get information on what was presented at the parent orienta-tion, please contact the office or your child’s teacher to make an appointment.

AsTumbo hosted the meeting for GEPB and faculty, staff, and parents came to show support for the custodial initiative. Also in attendance for the meeting was the 2015 Teacher of the Year winner, Melanie Blas along with finalists, Charlene Gumataotao, Patricia Leigh Anub, Deeann Norberg, Kimberly Pangelinan, and David Nelson. Summer School 2015
AsTumbo and Finegayan Elementary are partnering up for summer in the pursuit of preparing for students for the new school year. Our focus is English Language Arts and Math using STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). Students are learning core foundational skills through real life experiences and hands-on activities. Check out what's happening in and out of the classrooms.

Summer School 2015 has ended as parents attended the awards ceremony for student participation in the program. Students then treated their parents to a work exhibit where they shared what they learned and what they did.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife representatives Jamie Bass and Frank Manibusan gave a presentation the local marine life, the effects of pollution and invasive species on our local flora and fauna, and how we can take a proactive step to protect our wildlife on land and in the water. Students got a closer look at the Guam rail and examined specimens brought in from the lab. Students also shared what they knew from previous learning and tested their new knowledge by sharing what they learned from the presentation.
PESTS AND PLANTS
Students received an eye-opening experience when we were visited by Ms. Phoebe Wall and the Rhino Team of the University of Guam and the Department of Agriculture. Students learned about the life cycle of the rhino beetle, how to determine if it is male or female, and what to do if they find one. Students were also given the opportunity to hold one and how to make a trap to catch one. If you find a rhino beetle, please contact:Guam Plant Inspection Facility (PIF) at 475-1427.
Horticulture, Recycling, and much more with 4-H...
4-H showed students how to make a hanging planter using recycled materials. In addition to this hands-on activity, students learned about the the 4-H program and its mission, care for plants, as well as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

Island-wide Science Fair 2015This school year, we had 13 students join the Island-wide Science Fair. Categories ranged from Plants to Medical to Earth Science. Grade levels that participated ranged from 1st grade to 5th Grade.
